To help focus attention on this growing epidemic, communities across Ontario and around the world have proclaimed the last day of February International RSI Awareness Day. On this day, special events are held to build awareness and action on RSIs or MSDs and the impact these injuries have on workers, their families and the community. What can be done? The majority of RSIs or MSDs are preventable. Critical actions that can be taken include: Organize and/or participate in a RSI Awareness Day event Report symptoms and hazards early to your supervisor and joint health and safety committee (JHSC) or health and safety representative Report work-related MSDs to WSIB immediately Insist on quality training to address these issues Press employers to implement ergonomic prevention solutions Encourage governments to enact effective and enforced ergonomic regulations.

Talking Union Basics Introduces members to the PSAC and prepares them for more advanced union education. It provides an historical and structural overview of the union, introduces participants to the collective agreement and gives them a chance for hands-on practice in problem-solving.

Drawing on lessons from past successes, Level 2 Law participants learn how workers won health and safety rights and what needs to be done in the workplace to enforce these rights. Participants take an in-dept look at how health & safety laws and regulations have been interpreted and used to safeguard worker health and safety.

This introductory course begins by exploring the history of the compensation system in Ontario and the development of compensation legislation and the general principles of the system. Participants will learn how the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) determines whether an injury is compensable and learn about some workplace injuries and occupational illnesses. The course covers how to properly file a claim, and includes the timelines that are applicable. Worker and Employer obligations are covered as well as roles and responsibilities with respect to work reintegration. The WSIB work reintegration policies are discussed and the new direction that the Board is taking with respect to returning workers to their pre-injury job with the injury employer. Shared responsibilities are also discussed and ways in which unions should participate in work reintegration are explored. Leading research shows that a collaborative and cooperative approach to work reintegration following the hierarchy of jobs, beginning with pre-injury job, leads to better outcomes for both workers and employers. Protections under other legislation are also discussed should a work reintegration plan not provide sufficient protection to a worker in a work reintegration plan. Finally, participants discuss how to effectively implement the new skills that have been acquired through this course and what additional resources are available.

Gives Local Officers essential knowledge for upholding their Local responsibilities and building a strong union. Participants learn: - how an effective Local functions; - roles and responsibilities of the Local Executive; - how Executives can work well as a team, engage members, and - deal effectively with management. This basic course is a prerequisite for the Advanced Local Officers Training

The purpose of this two day course is to provide information and enforcement tools to PSAC Local executives, Health and Safety Committees and Local Stewards on the Canada Labour Code Part II requirements as it relates to violence prevention as well as its applicable regulations.
