PSAC GTA Pride Committee invites you to celebrate Virtual Pride on June 23, 2020 starting at 7pm.
Open to all PSAC members, including folks who self-identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ and allies.
We will begin by sharing our favourite 2SLGBTQIA+ poetry, including original work. We will then screen Toby Fell Holden’s short film Balcony and end with a discussion on the racial tensions that are currently happening in Canada and the US, and allyship.
Content warning: the short film includes scenes with smoking, alcohol, rape, racial slurs and violence.
A bit about Balcony:
Tina, a troubled teenage girl, is attracted to Dana, an Afghani girl, whom Tina tells us is oppressively victimized by her substance abusing father, Karim. Initially, we trust Tina and admire her protectiveness of Dana from the kids at school and on the violent estate, but as we watch their friendship blossom we come to suspect that something is off.
Balcony has won numerous awards, including the Iris Prize in 2016 (Cardiff’s International LGBT Short Prize), the 2016 Torino International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival’s Best Short Film and the 2016 Calgary International Film Festival’s Best Overall Short film.
