Our members, the Kingston Commissionaires, provide security services to the Canadian Forces Base in Kingston and are fighting for paid sick leave and to be treated with respect by their employer, the Corp of Commissionaires.

On June 19th, the Corp tried to circumvent the negotiations process by requesting a Final Offer vote be conducted by the Ministry of Labour. The same offer that the workers had previously rejected!

Our members stood strong and voted “NO!”

Pension Reform

We have made considerable progress over the past two rounds in our fight for parity with the broader law enforcement community. This week, we reiterated the need for pension reform for union members in the FB group. We are demanding a commitment from Treasury Board in support of pension reform. PSAC-CIU will also be undertaking other initiatives to push pension reform for the FB group during the coming election campaign.

David became an active member of the Union of National Defence Employees (UNDE), a component of PSAC, while working with the Department of National Defence at the Lincoln and Well Regiment in 2006. He was a union steward and has since held the positions of vice-president and president of his UNDE local. As a civilian member of the Regiment, he has provided LGBTQ2+ orientation for all new recruits in the hopes of fostering understanding of the issues facing the community.

Unionizing the university sector, fighting precarious work

PSAC has a long history of organizing in Canada’s universities and now counts over 30,000 members from this sector in its ranks. Recently, the union also filed for certification of additional workers at McGill University and the University of Saskatchewan, where PSAC locals already exist.

For at least two decades, Canadian universities have increasingly turned to short-term contracts for their academic and support staff. This has led to chronically low wages, no pensions and few, if any, benefits for many workers in the sector.

Working together, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and its component union, the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE), have produced a video to highlight the negative outcomes of the full-scale privatization of critical public infrastructure.

SAC encourages members to participate in NPSW events and use them as an opportunity to send a clear signal to government that it has failed its own employees.

With the federal election quickly approaching this fall, there is no better time to send the government a message:
