April 8, 2015 marks “International Day of Pink” (not to be confused with “Pink Shirt Day”, which is marked annually on the last Wednesday of February or “Anti-Bullying Day”, which in 2012 was declared by the United Nations as being observed annually on May 4th).
The original event began in Nova Scotia when two heterosexual High School students saw a gay student being bullied because he was wearing a pink shirt. They decided to buy pink shirts and a few days later got everyone at their High School to wear a pink shirt and stand together in solidarity and unite in celebrating diversity.
Communities across the country, and across the world, can come together to raise awareness by wearing pink and taking a stand against homophobia, transphobia and all forms of bullying.
Anyone can bully and anyone can be victimized by bullying, but together we can stop it.
