Black History Month

In December 1995, Parliament recognized February as Black History Month following a motion introduced by the first black woman elected to the House of Commons, the Honourable Jean Augustine.

Canadians take this time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make our country culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous.

The month commemorates the contributions of the black community to Canadian society, while offering the opportunity to learn more about the sacrifices and struggles of civil rights leaders who fought racism and discrimination in our country.

PSAC Ontario salutes the contributions of the many civil rights activists such as the late Nelson Mandela, whose contributions advanced Human Rights around the world.

During the month of February members are encouraged to participate in the many activities within our communities that celebrate Black History Month and honour the legacy of Black Canadians past and present.

For 2018, the theme of the Government of Canada Black History Month campaign is Black Canadian Women Stories of Strength, Courage and Vision. Please take the time to visit: www.blackhistorycanada.ca to learn more about the accomplishments of Black Canadians.
