Day of Mourning

On April 28, National Day of Mourning, we commemorate the thousands of workers who have been injured or lost their lives while on the job. April 28th also serves as a reminder for us to strive to make our workplaces safer.

To implement changes that improve our working lives requires political change. The Conservative federal government has shown there disregard in improving safety standards with changes brought about through the passage of Bill C-4.

Bill C-4 changes the definition of danger to “immediate danger”; no longer allowing for protections against hazardous materials or chronic illnesses. This compromises the ability for workers to refuse unsafe work, demonstrating how little this government cares for workers.

I encourage all members to participate in a Day of Mourning ceremony taking place in your communities, and let’s stand together for safer workplaces.
