Point Edward, ON, December 9, 2016 - The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), which represents the 47 Blue Water Bridge workers that have been on strike for nearly three weeks, have reached a new agreement.
Our negotiating team met with the employer yesterday, with the assistance of the Labour Board Conciliation officer, to reignite negotiations with the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL). On December 8 at 6 p.m., a tentative agreement was reached.
Today the negotiating team met with the workers at 10 a.m. to discuss and review the tentative agreement. After this meeting, the workers voted on the tentative agreement and they voted in favour of the new contract.
"Our goal has always been to make sure that these workers are protected and that they achieve an agreement that will make their lives better,” states Sharon DeSousa, PSAC Ontario Regional Executive Vice-President. “I am proud of these workers for standing strong, it’s not easy walking a picket line seven days a week in the cold.”
The Sarnia community, along with the unionized commercial truck drivers, have been exceptionally supportive of the picket line. “Our spirits are high because people have been so caring” says Paul Haney, Local President. “They know that this fight mattered and we’ve been able to stand strong because of that.”
