Updates

Our members who work for Blue Water Bridge (PSAC DCL 501) and have been on strike for nearly 3 weeks have voted to accept a new collective agreement today.

The entire labour movement stood behind these brave workers, who walked the line to protect their rights.

On behalf of PSAC Ontario, thank you to all the members who showed your support, it is greatly appreciated.

The People United Will Never Be Defeated!

In Solidarity,

Sharon DeSousa,

PSAC Ontario Regional Executive Vice-President

Bill C-27, An Act to amend the Pension Benefits Standards Act, is an attack on the retirement security of Canadians.

This bill will allow employers in the federal private sector and Crown Corporations to shift from good, defined benefit plans that provide secure and predictable pension benefits, into the much less secure form of target benefits. If passed, this bill would open the door to a disturbing trend of shifting all the risk of pension plans onto workers and retirees.

In 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that defined benefit pension plans that workers and retirees have already paid into should not be retroactively changed into target benefit plans. Yet, this is exactly what Bill C-27 will do.

Send a letter to Minister

PSAC has always stood for retirement security and opposed any move to eliminate defined benefit (DB) pension plans. We urge our members to send a letter to Finance Minister Bill Morneau to tell him and the Liberal government to abandon Bill C-27.

The Common Issues committee and PA bargaining team will resume negotiations with Treasury Board, with the assistance of a mediator, the week of December 12.

PSAC and the Employer returned to extended negotiations from November 1-9, after the Liberal government promised to bring a new mandate to the table.

I am encouraging our members to participate in the government’s consultation on the development of planned accessibility legislation. This is an important opportunity to provide input based on our experiences. The deadline is February 28, 2017.

We have a duty to help eliminate the systemic barriers that persist in our society. We need to work with other equity seeking members, and with our allies to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

In the Fall 2016 Auditor General’s report, Canada’s spending watchdog Michael Ferguson sends a strong message to the federal government: better long-term funding is urgently needed to improve public services and ensure they are built around citizens, not processes.

Examples of this were provided in areas such as vehicle safety, border security, income tax services and First Nations specific claims.

On December 6th, 1989, 14 women were gunned down by Marc Lepine while vocalizing “I hate feminists” at Ecole Polytechniques in Montreal. They were murdered simply because they were women.

Sadly this is far from a single event. The harsh reality is that upwards of 300 women and children flee violence everyday in Canada and sorrowfully, many do not make it out alive.
